چکیده

There is a strong spatial correlation between brightest clusters galaxies (BCGs) and the peak density and cooling rate of the intracluster medium (ICM). In this paper we combine integral field spectroscopy, CO observations and X-ray data to study three exceptional clusters (Abell 1991, Abell 3444 and Ophiuchus) where there is a physical and dynamical offset between the BCG and the cooling peak to investigate the connection between the cooling of the ICM, the cold gas being deposited and the central galaxy. We find the majority of the optical line emission is spatially coincident with the peak in the soft X-rays. In the case of A1991 we make separate detections of CO(2–1) emission on the BCG and on the peak of the soft X-ray emission suggesting that cooling continues to occur in the core despite being offset from the BCG. We conclude that there is a causal link between the lowest temperature (<2 keV) ICM gas and the molecular gas (∼30 K). This link is only apparent in systems where a transitory event has decoupled the BCG from the soft X-ray peak. We discuss the prospects for identifying more examples of this rare configuration.

X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies

Clusters of galaxies are gravitationally bound configurations containing typically hundreds of galaxies in a region about 10 cm in size. They range from irregular clusters, with strong subclustering, no strong central concentration, and mainly spiral galaxies, to regular clusters, with smooth and centrally condensed galaxy distributions containing few spiral galaxies. Observations of these clus...

An Entropy Threshold for Strong Hα and Radio Emission in the Cores of Galaxy Clusters

Our Chandra X-ray Observatory archival study of intracluster entropy in a sample of 222 galaxy clusters shows that Hα and radio emission from the brightest cluster galaxy are much more pronounced when the cluster’s core gas entropy is . 30 keV cm2. The prevalence of Hα emission below this threshold indicates that it marks a dichotomy between clusters that can harbor multiphase gas and star form...

Modified-entropy Models for the Intracluster Medium

We present a set of cluster models that link the present-day properties of clusters to the processes that govern galaxy formation. These models treat the entropy distribution of the intracluster medium as its most fundamental property. Because convection strives to establish an entropy gradient that rises with radius, the observable properties of a relaxed cluster depend entirely on its dark-ma...

A Large Mass of H2 in the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Zwicky

We present the Spitzer/IRS mid-infrared spectrum of the infrared-luminous ( ) brightest 11 L p 4 # 10 L IR , cluster galaxy (BCG) in the X-ray–luminous cluster Zwicky 3146 (Z3146; ). The spectrum shows strong z p 0.29 aromatic emission features, indicating that the dominant source of the infrared luminosity is star formation. The most striking feature of the spectrum, however, is the exceptiona...

The XMM Cluster Survey: the interplay between the brightest cluster galaxy and the intracluster medium via AGN feedback

Using a sample of 123 X-ray clusters and groups drawn from the XMM Cluster Survey first data release, we investigate the interplay between the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG), its black hole and the intracluster/group medium (ICM). It appears that for groups and clusters with a BCG likely to host significant active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback, gas cooling dominates in those with TX > 2 keV wh...
